There are moments as a parent when you step back and realise something special is happening right in front of you. Watching my two boys brothers training together in the sports hall, both in their gis, both focused, both completely in their element. It got me a bit emotional if I am honest.

Jakob has been assisting Nicholas with his kata practice lately. What started as a bit of sibling help after class has grown into something genuinely beautiful. Nicholas listens to everything his older brother says. Properly listens. Head tilted up, watching every movement, hanging on every correction. And Jakob? He has this patience I did not know he had.
Learning to Lead
Jakob sometimes assists in class at the dojo now. Sensei gives him younger students to work with and he takes it seriously. But there is something different when he works with Nicholas. It is personal. He wants his little brother to succeed, and you can see it in how carefully he explains each stance, each hand position, each breath.

Nicholas is preparing for his black belt grading. We are looking at sometime this year, possibly early next year depending on how the calendar shapes up. Watching him train with Jakob, I think he is going to be ready. The focus is there. The dedication is there. And having a brother who has already walked that path makes all the difference.
A Bond Built Through Karate
They have really connected through all this extra training. The increased sessions, the early mornings, the repetition. Brothers who train together build something different. They understand each other’s struggles. They celebrate each other’s wins. They push each other when motivation dips.

Watching Jakob adjust Nicholas’s belt after a drill, chatting quietly about what to improve, then stepping back to watch him try again. That is the stuff that stays with you as a dad. Jakob is only thirteen but he is growing into someone who will be a genuinely good teacher one day. You can already see it forming.
This journey is not just about one athlete. It is about a family growing together through martial arts. And honestly, these quiet training moments mean as much as any medal.
We are still working toward getting Jakob to Brazil for the JKS World Championships. Every bit of support helps us keep this journey going. If you want to be part of it, you can find our GoFundMe here: Support Jakob’s Journey
