Med ball training has become one of my favourite ways to build power for kata. Every Sunday I get out in the garden or the driveway and put in the work. It is not glamorous but it makes a real difference to my performance.

Today I did my usual routine. Resistance band work first to warm up my hips and get my muscles firing. Then straight into med ball throws. The band stuff looks simple but honestly it burns after a few sets. You have to stay tight and controlled the whole time.
Why Med Ball Work Helps Kata
In kata you need to be explosive. Every technique has to snap. Every stance has to be solid. The med ball helps me build that power from my core outwards. When I throw it I have to use my whole body. Hips, core, arms, everything working together. That is exactly what kata needs.

I have been doing these sessions for a while now and I can feel the difference in training. My kiba dachi feels stronger. My punches feel sharper. It all connects back to this kind of conditioning work.
Training Anywhere Works
The best thing about this routine is I can do it anywhere. Garden, driveway, wherever. No excuses. No gym membership needed. Just a med ball, a resistance band, and some space.

I know some people think you need fancy equipment to get better but that is not true. Consistency beats everything. Doing this every Sunday adds up over weeks and months. That is how you build real strength for competition.
With Brazil and the JKS World Championships coming up I need to be at my best. Every session counts. Even the ones in my back garden barefoot on the grass.
Support the Journey
Getting to Brazil costs a lot and every bit of support helps. If you want to help me get there you can donate through GoFundMe at Support Jakob’s Journey. Even sharing the link means a lot.
Massive thanks to Motion Mender for helping me recover after these tough sessions. Training hard is only half the battle. Recovery is just as important.
Sunday sessions done. Back at it tomorrow.
