A proper football tournament win does not come easy. Today started at the kitchen table with eggs, bacon, and sausages. Jakob needed the fuel because the Radley Youth FC annual tournament was going to test every bit of energy he had.

Watching him eat that breakfast in his SCYFC kit, I could see he was already thinking about the day ahead. His football club means a lot to him. The Lodge Hill Garage sponsorship on his chest, his teammates waiting for him. This was going to be a long one.
A Difficult Start
The group stage was tough. Honestly, the boys started slow. The kind of slow where you stand on the sideline wondering if they left their legs at home. They lost to Benson in the groups and for a while it looked like they might not make it through at all.
But they scraped through on goal difference. Just barely. And sometimes that is all you need. A second chance.
Finding Form When It Mattered
In the semi final against Harwell, everything clicked. These boys know each other from around the area so there was extra pride on the line. SCYFC won 2 to 1. It was tight, it was nervous, and it was brilliant to watch.
Then came the final. Against the same Benson team that beat them earlier. This time the boys were sharper. More confident. They controlled the game and came away 2 to 0 winners to lift the plate trophy.

Seeing Jakob hold that trophy in the rain, medal round his neck, properly soaked but grinning. That is the stuff you remember as a parent.
Sport Beyond Karate
Jakob’s main focus is karate. Everyone who follows him knows that. But football gives him something different. Team sport, different fitness demands, different mental challenges. It complements his martial arts training in ways we did not expect when he first started playing.
He plays through his Osgood Schlatter pain sometimes. He manages it. He balances both sports as best he can. Today was proof that hard work pays off even when you start slowly.

Today was about football. Tomorrow it is back to the dojo. The journey continues.
